    Uninstalled Program; computer won't allow me to reinstall

    by Tim » Sat Apr 05, 2008 11:43 am

    I had a problem when I would try to start RetailEdge 7.5, I would get an error message that says something like "Unable to Initialize the Borland Database Engine - Error code
    $2108." I followed the instructions that you provided another user to search for bdeadmin.exe and to change the value from 2108 to 4096 but the problem was I could not located the bdeadmin.exe file using the search function that you prescribed. I utilized all the search options provided but still no success so I concluded that I must have inadvertantly deleted the file during a time when I was cleaning up my disk drive - stupid thing to do.

    So I decided to uninstall the program after moving my backup files to a safe location. When I tried to reinstall the retailedge 7.5 program I got the following message:

    16 bit windows subsystem
    -------------------------------
    C:\windows\sysem32\autoexec.nt.
    The system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. Chose "close" to terminate the application."

    There are two options to select: "close" or "ignore" (to continue the install). I didn't want to discontinue the install process so I selected ignore but the computer still stops the install process.

    Do you have any ideas what the issue is with my inability to reinstall the program? Is there a workaround or fix? Otherwise I'm hosed....

    Sorry for the long message and thanks for your help,

    Tim

    Tim,

    This error can be caused by a long file name issue. One thing you can try is to check the IDAPI section in your WIN.INI file:

    To do this:

    1. Click on Start|Run, at the Open line type WIN.INI and click on OK.
    2. Click on the Search menu and select Find
    3. Type IDAPI and click on Find Next.
    4. Find the [IDAPI] section
    5. Change any section that has the word Program Files to Program~1.
    6. Save the changes & restart Windows.

    Before editing the Win.ini file make backup so that you can unwind the changes if you have mistyped anything or if the change causes any unwanted behavior.

    Hi Bill,

    Thanks for responding. I tried what you suggested but couldnt seem to locate the IDAPI section. I clicked on "Start" and then "Run" and at the open line typed in "WIN.INI" and clicked okay. The result was a notepad window that opened with the name "WIN - Notepad." This text window contained the following information:

    ; for 16-bit app support
    [fonts]
    [extensions]
    [mci extensions]
    [files]
    [Mail]
    MAPI=1
    CMC=1
    CMCDLLNAME=mapi.dll
    CMCDLLNAME32=mapi32.dll
    MAPIX=1
    MAPIXVER=1.0.0.1
    OLEMessaging=1
    [MCI Extensions.BAK]
    aif=MPEGVideo
    aifc=MPEGVideo
    aiff=MPEGVideo
    asf=MPEGVideo2
    asx=MPEGVideo2
    au=MPEGVideo
    m1v=MPEGVideo
    m3u=MPEGVideo2
    mp2=MPEGVideo
    mp2v=MPEGVideo
    mp3=MPEGVideo2
    mpa=MPEGVideo
    mpe=MPEGVideo
    mpeg=MPEGVideo
    mpg=MPEGVideo
    mpv2=MPEGVideo
    snd=MPEGVideo
    wax=MPEGVideo2
    wm=MPEGVideo2
    wma=MPEGVideo2
    wmv=MPEGVideo2
    wmx=MPEGVideo2
    wvx=MPEGVideo2
    wpl=MPEGVideo
    m2v=MPEGVideo
    mod=MPEGVideo
    [IOCR]
    exename=READIRIS
    fullname=READIRIS
    [READIRIS]
    exe-path=C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Readiris\
    iris-path=C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Readiris\
    version=500
    SN4=43990216
    menu=1
    language=1
    Scanner32=twaino38,5
    [IRIS_IPE]
    menu=1

    I tried a variety of ways to locate the IDAPI section including clicking on the Start button and going through that process as well as clicking on the "Find" function within the Win-Notepad window and the response came back no file found. I guess I'm a little confused as to what I need to do after step 1 in the instructions that you provided. Where do I located the search menu on step 2? My operating system is Windows XP so maybe what you have is different than XP?

    Thanks for your help.
