Size of State/Province field in Customer Database

    by peakskishop » Wed Jun 18, 2014 11:07 am

Please, Please, Please can you make the number of characters for the State/Province field in the customer database larger?

We have many international customers and many provinces are much longer than the currently allowed 10 characters.

Right now I can only input Gloucester (England), not the actual Province - Gloucestershire. And New South Wales (Australia) looks like New South Wa. (hardly professional). These are just two examples, I could provide many more.

Quite frequently it causes a customer to be concerned when they see their receipt that appears to have the Province incorrect or incomplete prior to receiving their (shipped) order. They think we have screwed up their Province.

It seems that 15 characters might be a more reasonable length for that data field. Any chance of getting that changed with the next update?

    THANK YOU!

    Tracy,

That request is not going to be that easy to fill. Changing database structures is a bigger deal because of versioning and backup/restore issues. You are correct that the Province is only 10 characters. The intent is that this is supposed to be an abbreviation of the Province/State/County.

Just like we have abbreviations Massachusetts = MA, most countries have them as well and this field length was designed with this in mind. Canada has them (Alberta=AB) and in your case England does as well (Gloucestershire = GLS). If you need a list there are sites that have them and here is a link to one for UK counties.

If all else fails, then you can just put it in the Country field which should allow you 50 characters. But abbreviations are the way to go.
