    How Do I Import Data Into RetailEdge?

    by RetailEdge Moderator » Tue Jan 24, 2006 4:42 pm

    To import a file into RetailEdge, choose Import from the Tools menu. This will start the RetailEdge import wizard. Choose the file category that you would like to import. RetailEdge can import (and export) the following files using the RetailEdge REDI format:

    * Customer
    * Department
    * Inventory
    * Purchase Order
    * Receiving
    * Sales
    * Vendor

    When you have selected the file category you want to import, press the Next button on the Wizard. The next screen will ask you to choose a Filename for file you want to import. This file has to have a CSV extension. You can type in the Filename or you can press the File Folder button and browse for the file as well. You will also be asked to choose the Type of import you want. Choose the type of import you want from the dropdown list. Import types vary depending on the file you are importing.

    To assist you in the importing process, RetailEdge will allow you to view the file you are importing so that you can see why the file might not be importing correctly. To view the file as a text file, press on the View as Text button. Viewing the file as a text file allows you to edit the file and resave your changes. To view the file as a REDI file press the View as REDI button. Viewing the file as a REDI file allows you to view the file record by record so that you can scroll through the file and make sure that the file is going to import properly.

    When you have selected the file you want to import and the import type, press the Next button. This will bring you to the Test Data screen. Pressing Next on this screen will test the import file for problems. If problems are found RetailEdge will alert you to the error and allow you to view the record and line where the error was found. If errors are found, you should press the View as Text button, make the necessary correction to the file and save the file.

    If no data errors occur, pressing the Next button, will bring you to the Import Data screen. Pressing Next again will start the import process. RetailEdge will then display the total number of records found in the import file and the number of records imported.

    Note: RetailEdge will truncate data to make sure it fits into the fields to be imported. For instance if a Last Name is longer than the required 25 characters, RetailEdge will truncate the name to 25 characters. If you are unsure of the allowable number of characters for a field, you should press the View as REDI button and scroll through the file by press the Next button. This will list the required fields and their allowable length.
