Started the day - reciept printer is dead

by Little Mountain » Thu Dec 11, 2008 9:12 am

Went to start, printer is dead. It feeds paper if I push the feed button, but it doesn't print or open the drawer.
It wasn't unplugged or anything else along those lines.

Simple backup the night before, then open the following morning.

    Any ideas?

The receipt printer you are using is a Star TSP100 (143 with cutter). This printer is very sensitive to switching USB ports. However performing the following Steps will help you identify where the problem lies.

    1. Open up the Printers folder in Windows that shows you your installed printers.
    2. Check to see that the printer is there. Sometimes you will see multiple printers and sometimes only 1.
    3. Turn off the printer and unplug it from your USB port.
    4. Delete all the Star receipt printers showing in the list. You might have to open the printer queue and cancel any jobs that are still in the queue before Windows will allow you to delete the printer.
    5. Plug the printer back into your computer. It should automatically install the driver and create an instance of the printer in the Windows printers folder.
    6. Check to see that the printer is actually able to print. You can do this by doing an on reset. Turn off the priner. Press the Feed button down and while holding it down turn the printer back on. The printer should print a self test. If it feeds paper but does not print, check that you have the paper in correctly. If it does not feed your printer may be broken and you should call Star Micronics to see about getting it fixed.
    7. If Step 6 is Ok, the next step is make sure the computer is communicating properly with the printer. In Windows, Right Click the printer and choose properties. Then on the General Tab you will see a Print Test Page button. Press this. If the printer does a test print then you know Windows is communicating with the device. If it does not, then you need to check your connections. Check your cabling and try switching the USB port that the receipt printer is plugged into. Be careful when you do this that another instance of the driver does not get installed as Copy 1, Copy 2, etc. If it does your best bet is to uninstall them all and start clean again as in Steps 4 and 5.
    8. If step 7 works, then check your settings in RetailEdge. From the Tools |Settings|Workstations menu, edit your workstation. Make sure that it is pointing to the correct printer. One thing that can help determine if you are pointing to the correct printer is to quit RetailEdge, rename the printer something like "Real TSP" and then restart RetailEdge and in the Workstation settings choose this new renamed printer. Check the Cash Drawer settings when editing the settings and make sure it is set to "Driven by Receipt Printer"

Once you have done all this you can simply choose open the Sales Manager, Choose a completed Sale and press the Reprint button. This should print a receipt for you. A No Sale will verify that the Drawer Opens as well.

We got it fixed, thanks Bill.
It hadn't been unplugged but it wasn't selected under "printer options" as the right one.

not sure what happened but all is well now.
