RetailEdge Point of Sale Software on the Mac

by RetailEdge Moderator » Thu Apr 19, 2007 12:21 pm

RetailEdge 8.0 will work fine on a Mac. We are currently running the program in-house on Apple MacBooks using Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows Vista. RetailEdge works fine in an OS Window, Full Screen or in Coherence modes.

The MacBooks are currently being run connecting across the network to a Windows XP machine. The database and RetailEdge server are on a Windows XP machine. However the server has been installed as well on the MacBook and so we know it will work fine as a stand-alone machine or connected to the database server accross the network. The network can be mac to mac or mac to PC.

The MacBooks have 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors and 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM running OS X.

Parallels is configured with 512MB RAM and the USB controller is set to autoconnect.

We are also currently testing the program using Parallels and Boot Camp. But based on our experience with the program in Parallels Desktop, we don't anticipate any problems.

This should (even with the expense of Parallels Desktop and Windows OS) provide a good affordable point of sale software solution for those who want to or need to use a Mac.

RetailEdge on the Mac Connecting Devices

by RetailEdge Moderator » Fri Apr 20, 2007 3:10 pm

Care should be used when purchasing peripheral devices (receipt printers, scanners, magstrip readers, etc.). Parallels currently supports only connecting 2 USB 1.1 devices and 8 USB 2.0. RetailEdge requires a dongle be attached to one USB port. So the other devices should be USB 2.0 to allow you to connect more devices.

The current recommendation is to use Parallels and Fusion only for back office or Island usage. Like we do. The POS should be a simple easy to use system and adding a virtual terminal just adds needlessly to the complexity. Especially if you are using bluetooth or wireless devices.

If you want a good looking device that fits into your business there are lots of touch monitor or all-in-one systems that run Windows that can be less expensive. Contact us if you want us to put together a system tailored for your business needs.
