Is there a way to set up RetailEdge so that it points to some sort of training data so that I can teach my clerks how to use RetailEdge without affecting real data?

Yes. RetailEdge installs with three pre-installed databases:

1) RetailEdgeData_Demo
2) RetailEdgeData
3) RetailEdgeData_Train

The RetailEdgeData is your "real" data. The RetailEdgeData_Train contains fake data that you can use to train your employees.

To change to the training data, follow these steps:

1) Select Tools / Settings / Server Connection from the main menu.

2) On the Settings: Server Connection form, edit the "DB Name" field. You should change it to "RetailEdgeData_Train" (no quotes).

3) Click the Save button.


Be sure to remember that this workstation is now pointing to fake data and don't ring up real sales - they'll be lost.

Another way to do this can be found in the Help installed with the program. But I have listed this below as well.

You can optionally create another copy of RetailEdge that will automatically point to the training data. To do this:

1. Copy the contents of the RetailEdge installation folder (not including any data or server folders) into a new folder.
2. Create a desktop shortcut for the retailedge.exe in the new folder.
3. Rename the new shortcut appropriately (e.g., RetailEdge Training).
4. Start RetailEdge by double clicking on the shortcut icon.
5. Choose Settings|Server Connection from the Tools menu item.
6. Change the DBName to RetailEdgeData_Train.
7. Press the Save button.

Note: To use your real location information, simply make a backup of your real data and then when you are in the training database, restore this data. You can continue to update this training database with real data as necessary.
