That is of course not an issue for RetailEdge since all the data is local to your business. We designed it this way so that you would have all your data with you all the time. This is one of the big problems with the Cloud based systems out there today.

This however can be a problem if you have integrated processing turned on and are using the internet to process transactions. This is why we recommend that you have a backup terminal that you can plug in and use in the event that this happens. The credit card processing partners we use will usually provide these terminals to you no charge or with some small monthly fee.

To setup RetailEdge to work in this off line mode for credit card processing, you can either:

1. Choose Workstations from the Tools|Settings menu item. Modify the workstation and select the Credit Cards (1of2) tab. Set the Credit Card Setting to “Do Not Process Credit Cards”, or

2. Create an alternate payment method that does not use credit card processing (some users call it Off-Line). Setup this payment method to Not Process as A Credit Card. This option may make it easier for clerks when this problem occurs. Clerks will need to know that when this occurs they should just plug the separate terminal in and use that.

One thing we hear is that people write down credit card numbers to be used later. You should never do this. We spend countless hours making sure RetailEdge is secure and uses encrypted technology and tokenization, etc. to protect sensitive credit card data. Just writing down credit card numbers just opens you up to having some unauthorized person use this information not to mention many of your customers might not like the idea of having slips of paper with their information on it.
