Item ID Conflicting with Stock Number

    by mmorales » Sat Sep 01, 2012 7:32 pm

Situation: A product with an Item ID 10001 and another Item with the Stock Number 10001.

RetailEdge lets you create the products without any problems but when you are in the Sales Process and you try to lookup for the item 10001 it only appears the one with the Item ID 10001 not the other one with Stock Number 10001. If you try to change the search criteria to Stock Number it still doesn’t work, it only shows the product with Item ID 10001 not the one with Stock Number 10001.

    Yes you are correct.

RetailEdge uses 6 digit item IDs in the program. We recommend that you use stock numbers that are less than or more than 6 digits for this reason. The reason this was done was because:

    1. It allows a 1,000,000 active items in your inventory.

    2. It will not conflict with most stock numbers. So you can create short stock numbers (like G for gift or 1-10 for commonly entered products. 1 will not conflict with the item IDs since RetailEdge treats 1 differently than 000001. When you are talking about UPCs and EANs they will be 12 and 13 numbers. Even shortened UPCs should be 7.

    3. It allows RetailEdge to have a unique number to look up that is short enough that a barcode of the number will fit on even the smallest labels. And we can also print compressed barcodes that require an even number of digits.

So you can see that we are trying to find the sweet spot between too long and too short. Six was the best.

Please take a look at how the look up process on the RetailEdge sales screen works in the RetailEdge help. Setting the find by does not override the sequence of look ups. Only the last look up which is a partial on the find by criteria. So RetailEdge will look up and find any of the following if it finds an exact pattern match before it finds the final partial "find by" critera.

    ItemID
    Stock Number
    UPC1
    UPC2
    Alias
    PackageID.
    Find by.

    Hope this helps.
