    Email PDFs from Gmail

    by peakskishop » Mon Jun 27, 2011 11:57 am

We use Gmail for all our Email and have the Gmail Notifier installed so that Gmail pops up as our Default Mail client when any program needs to send an email. In RetailEdge, when we send an email from the Modify Customer screen, it works great and opens a new message in Gmail just like it should. But, when clicking the Email button from a report to send the PDF, RE always tries to open Outlook. Why are the two Email options different?

    Tracy,

Not sure why this is occurring but these two procedures access e-mail in different ways. One is just opening up your e-mail client and putting the address in the Address line. The E-Mail button has to open the E-Mail and attach the PDF file that has been created (MailTo:). In order to attach something to an E-Mail we need to The Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI). I don't think that Gmail supports this. But you can do a search and see what it currently supports.

As I understand it you can have Gmail as the default handler for mailto: links, but there is no way to make it MAPI-compliant. Probably more than you wanted to know.

You can always, save the file as a PDF, the send the e-mail to the customer and attach the saved PDF.
