How would one issue a gift card, but not charge for it. Example a promotion that would include a gift card for $10.00, or in our case a advertising deal that includes us giving a gift card for $20.00 to the radio station that a listener would win when they call in.

Have you tried manually issuing a Gift Card? This can be done from the RetailEdge main menu by going to Customer / Gift Card / Issue Gift Card (Manually).

When you issue a manual Gift Card, no money is changed through the register. You'll still assign a Gift Card number and a a Gift Card amount.

You could treat this as a coupon. However, gift cards are things that are more permanent and can be reused and recharged. A coupon would typically be a one shot deal and also would be treated differently from the sales side of things (A gift card get applied as a payment method to the sale vs. a coupon gets applied as a separate item that either reduces the sale total or discounts items on a sale).

Could you also treat it as a coupon? Or is that different? We've never done gift cards but we have done coupons in the past. Are they one in the same or different?
