What types of discount rules does RetailEdge Support?

by RetailEdge Moderator » Wed Jul 14, 2010 1:52 pm

This post was modified on August 14, 2019. Discount Rules are always being changed and modified. The most current list of discount rules can be in our help file here. In addition discount rules are applied in order of priority. You can find the discount rule application priority discussion here.

RetailEdge has a number of discount rules that allow users to manage time based inventory and customer discounting.

    Group Rules

    A. Buy X, Get Y percent off. Discounts X Items at Y Percent off AFTER you have sold X items. (e.g., Buy 3 get 50% off.)
    B. Buy X, Get Y at Z percent off - Item. Discounts Y Items at Z Percent off after you have sold X items. (e.g., Buy 3 get 1 at 50% off for the same item). If there are multiple Item discounts, the last one listed in the Discount Tab on the inventory item wins.
    C. Buy X, Get Y at Z percent off - Group. Discounts Y Items at Z Percent off after you have sold X items. (e.g., Buy 3 get 1 at 50% off for any item within a matching group (e.g., department, vendor, class)) . This rule will NOT be applied to an item that already has an Item Group Discount above. If there are multiple - Group discounts, the last one listed in the Discount Tab on the inventory item wins.
    D. Mix and Match. Discounts multiple quantities of items to a certain dollar value. (e.g., 3 for $1.00, etc.). Mix and Match discounts will override any other Group Discount.

    Inventory

    A. Basic - Percent Off. Discounts items by a percent amount (e.g., 30% off)
    B. Basic - Amount Off. Discounts items by an a dollar amount (e.g., $1.00 off everything in the store)
    C. Basic - Fixed Price. Discounts Items to a specific dollar amount (e.g., All items $9.99 in this department)
    C. Cost Plus - Percent. Discounts items by a percentage above cost
    D. Cost Plus - Amount. Discounts items by a dollar amount above cost

    Customer

    A. Basic - Percent Off. Discounts items by a percent amount (e.g., 30% off) for selected customers
    B. Basic - Amount Off. Discounts items by an a dollar amount (e.g., $1.00 off everything in the store) for selected customers
    C. Basic - Fixed Price. Discounts Items to a specific dollar amount (e.g., All items $9.99 in this department)
    D. Cost Plus - Percent. Discounts items by a percentage above cost for selected customers
    E. Cost Plus - Amount. Discounts items by a dollar amount above cost for selected customers

This customer (direct) discount settings and the discount rules are not mutually exclusive. A customer can have both and RetailEdge will find the better discount. Applied Discount Rules as displayed in theDiscount tab.

    Customer AND Inventory

These discounts are similar to the Inventory and Customer discounts but allow you to set up filters based on both customer and inventory files (e.g., discount department X by 30% for all customers from Vermont on July 4).

    A. Basic - Percent Off. Discounts items by a percent amount (e.g., 30% off)
    B. Basic - Amount Off. Discounts items by an a dollar amount
    C. Basic - Fixed Price. Discounts Items to a specific dollar amount (e.g., All items $9.99 in this department)
    D. Cost Plus - Percent. Discounts items by a percentage above cost
    E. Cost Plus - Amount. Discounts items by a dollar amount above cost

    Complete Sale (Coupon).

A Complete Sale is not based on a particular file and is simplest type of discount. This allows you todiscount everything in your inventory by a certain percentage or amount. This is useful for storewide sales and can be set for a specific time period.

For this type of discount you need to have a coupon code in the Coupon Code field. If you don't check that the Coupon Required Checkbox then RetailEdge will automatically load this Rule when the Sales Screen is started. However you can require that a Coupon be presented in order for the rule to be applied by checking the Coupon Required Checkbox.

    A. Complete Sale - Percent Off. Discounts any item on the Sales Screen by a percent amount
    B. Complete Sale - Amount Off. Discounts all items on the Sales Screen by a dollar amount. This discountis a different from the other discount rule types and works by applying/returning a non-stock item with the description of the applied coupon on the sale. This will allow you to better see how the coupon is applied to the sale.
    C. Complete Sale - Weekly Sales Incentive. Discounts by applying a coupon based on customer sales over the past 6 days. The discount is defined by the Discount Tiers (e.g., $10.00 - $19.99, 10%). The discount amount can be capped by the value defined in the Max of Today's Purchase Applied to Coupon. This provides a simple automatically applied loyalty program that can augment the more comprehensive loyalty program already available in RetailEdge.

Additional discount rules are being added all the time and so if you want to make sure you have the complete list, just choose Discount Rules Edit from the Inventory menu and look at the lists.

How Are the Discount Rules Applied?

by RetailEdge Moderator » Tue Mar 25, 2014 12:28 pm

You should be carful when creating these discount rules and make sure that you understand how the rules are applied. Unexpected results can occur if an item in contained in multiple rules. Once you create and apply a rule you should alway run a test sale with some of the items to which the discount rule applies to make sure that the actual result matches your intended result.

The basic order that rules are applied to an item are as follows:

Group Discounts are processed first. Percentage Discounts are processed subsequent to Group Discounts and will supersede the group discounts if they are greater. The largest Percentage Discount wins.

This can give some unexpected results. For instance if an Item A is in a Buy X, Get Y at Z rule that states that if you buy 1 and you get the next 2 for 50% off, and you also have the Item A, in a rule that says the item should be discounted at 60% off, when you buy three of them, all 3 of Item A will be discounted at 60% off. However, if the percentage rule says that Item A should be discounted at 40% off, after adding 3 to the sales screen you will see the following.

    Item A 40% (Percent Discount)
    Item A 50% (Buy X Discount)
    Item A 50% (Buy X Discount)

This may be more of a discount than you had intended. In addition there is a precedence within the group rules. This is described in the description of the group rule above.

Another example of how you can get some unexpected results with multiple discount rules is as follows:

    1. Setup a Buy 3 get 1 at 100% off - Group (buy 3 get the 4th for free for anything in a particular group).
    2. Sell 4 different items. The first item costs $1, second $2, third $3, fourth $4.

This discount works is assume a Buy 3 get the 4th (lowest price one) for free (100% off)).

If I add the items to the sales screen the first time I will have the $1 item discounted to $0 (lowest price item). However if I add these 4 items to the sales screen a second time, the $1 dollar item won’t be discounted on the second group of items, but the $3 item will be discounted to $0. You might think that it should be the $1 item again. However the $3 item is the one that gets discounted because it is truly the best discount for the customer and if your customer wanted to get the best discount he/she could just bring up the items as $1,$1, $2, $2 this would discount the $1 to $0 and then the second batch would be $3, $3, $4, $4 and get the $3 discounted to $0.
