How do I set up an item to be tax exempt

In addition to selling taxable items, we also sell non-taxable services. I followed the RetailEdge Tax Exceptions and 2-Tiered Tax Rates set up but am still finding that these items are not being unchecked as we list them in the customers items during the sale. My employees forget to uncheck these items as they list them and is making this a booking nightmare for us. For instance, the procedure I followed to create a non-tax item for Bead Classes is as follows:
    Created a department called Classes
Created a sales item for each class we offer each month using the department Classes
Added an exception to the tax jurisdiction for both our city and state/county jurisdictions using the dept as the exception
What am I doing wrong or am not doing?
    Thank you.

Sounds like your setting up something incorrectly. When an item is checked off on the sales screen it just means that it is taxable under the jurisdiction rules you setup. So if an item is setup as taxable and the class it is in is an exception to the tax jurisdiction, then the item should not be taxed as a part of the sale.

Clerks should not have to uncheck the items taxable box on the sale in order for this to happen. What should be happening is that you will show on your tax report that you have $X of Taxable Sales for a particular jurisdiction and $Y of Non-Taxable due to the the exception.

If this is not what is happening you might need to call support and have them take a look at your settings.
