Is it possible to discount a whole department? In April I want to focus on pet food and I want to discount the whole department by 5-10% or whatever, but obviously I don't want to spend the time to go through all of our bags to do so.

Not currently. This is one of the item on the suggestion list. But it is a bigger issue than just discounting a department. There needs to be a way to discount for a particular duration and have the discount return to the original value after the set time. Right now if we allowed a discount of an entire department, there would be no way to have the discount removed at a future time. In adddition this type of discounting can lead to problems with receiving. Since you are changing the price of items, we need a way to let the program know that this is only discounting the current price and make sure that future receiving sessions receiving in items at the non discounted pricing.

In addition, there are 2 for discounts, and customer discounting etc. that needs to be taken into account when we do this type of feature. Should customer discounting supercede discounts or be in additon to current discounts? Currently if you just change a price to reflect a 10% discount, then you don't know whether this is a discount or a simple price change. Should other discounts in place override the 10% department discount. We want to make sure that the user has some option to not allow (or at least know the ramifications of such discounting) before implementing this type of mass discounting.

Discounting is a big issue. There are many things that need to be thought about before the feature can be put in place.

I have noticed that using a customer's standard discount and having inventory items that have their own discount only compounds the discount.

Example:
I give John a 10% standard discount
I have items in inventory that I want to give anyone a discount for if they buy it and assign the items a 10% discount
When John purchases one of my already discounted items, he gets his regular 10% discount AND then the item's discount kicks in as well - giving John a 20% discount!

Discounting in this software can be hazardous. It seems to be an either/or thing - either give the individual customer a discount, or discount by inventory item. Personally, I'm waiting for the update that let's me select a date range for a sale.

Nope. This is going to require a datastructure change. We are planning on having this change be a part of 8.19 (the next release). But can't guarantee that it will be in. Keep your fingers crossed.
