When I was trying to add a few test items, scanning in the UPC, RetailEdge wants to close the Edit Inventory screen when you scan the UPC. If you are not done setting up or editing the item you have to open the item again and go back to the tab you were on.

Where are you doing this from? Inventory, Receiving or a Purchase Order.

RetailEdge won't automatically close the form if you don't have all the information filled out so I am not sure where this is occurring.

I will explain how the process should be working and let us know what it is that you see happening.

When you scan a UPC from a barcode, typically the scanner puts a carriage return (enter) at the end of the scan. This is typically used to let retailedge know that you are done with the scan. On the sales screen it will enter the item, when creating inventory, it tells us that you have finished entering all of the items in a stock number.

When scanning an item into Receiving and a Purchase Order, when the carriage return is sent by the scanner at the end of the scan, one of two things should happen.

1. If the item is a new item, the form should not close, because there is not enough information to save the new record. RetailEdge needs to have a description, vendor, department, price etc. before it will save an item.

2. If the item is an existing item then RetailEdge will expect that you will want to enter a quantity and will automatically display the quantity tab and place the cursor in quantity field so that you can quickly enter a quantity.

One thing that will change this behavior on the inventory editor on a purchase order or in receiving will be checking the "Quick Lookups" checkbox. This checkbox is located directly under the Form Options button on the lower right hand side of the form.

If the Quick Lookups checkbox is checked, RetailEdge will perform an incremental search of the inventory to find the item and if it does find an item, it will fill in the rest of the information for that item. This is a useful feature when you are creating your own stock numbers and want to copy the information from one item to another (kind of a quick copy). So if I create an item called SHIRT-S and want to create one called SHIRT-M with all of the same information, then I can type in SHIRT-S, backspace out the S and put in an M and save the item. This can save a lot of time when creating items.

This however, can cause problems when scanning UPC barcodes. The way a UPC is structured is that he first part of the code are a manufacturers code assigned to them by the UCC. The second part of the code is just a number that the manufacturer makes up. So you can see that doing an incremental search with UPCs can cause problems. RetailEdge would find the first instance of the code and bring the information into the form which might be totally unrelated to the item you are creating. So unchecking this box will not bring in item information into the form, until the carriage return is pressed at the end of the scan. If the item exists, RetailEdge will bring in the rest of the item information and display the quantity tab, if not, the form will stay open and wait for you to fill in the rest of the information.
