Can you give us a list of common start-up error messages and some hints on what they mean?

Error: Can't start program. Could not establish a connection to the server. It's possible that the server is not running or that you need to check your settings in "Tools, Settings, Server".

This is the most common start-up error message and can be caused by a number of issues. First, check your values in Tools / Settings / Server Connection. Make sure you have the correct IP (or URL) to the server, port number, etc. Standrard default values that are usually not changed are Port Number = 12005, DB Name = RetailEdgeData, Password - RetailEdge8.0.

If you have the correct values and are still having problems, then the next thing to look at is whether you have a network problem or any security software on the server could be blocking the client's request. This could include firewalls (software- and/or hardware-based), security suites (e.g. McAfee, Norton), or other security software running on the server.

Error: Can't start program. Can not find settings file (INI).

This error happens if RetailEdge can not find the following file: “RetailEdge.ini”. This file should be in the application’ program folder. The program folder is typically “C:\Program Files\High Meadow Business Solutions\RetailEdge 8.0\Server\Data".

Error: Can't start program. Problem while reading settings file (INI).

This error happens if RetailEdge experiences an unknown error while reading the following file: “RetailEdge.ini”.

Error: Can't start program (correct location not found). Please call High Meadow Business Solutions for assistance.

This error happens if the Locations “LocID” value is incorrect. If this happens, you need to contact Customer Support. This can not be repaired by users.

Error: Can't start program. Problem while reading settings file (LOC).

This error can happen if the Settings_Loc table is corrupted or otherwise damaged. This can be caused by power interruptions or other premature database server terminations (e.g. computer reset).

If you get this message, you can attempt to verify and rebuild the table using the maintenance tools in the RetailEdge_Status application (found in the "C:\Program Files\High Meadow Business Solutions\RetailEdge 8.0” folder).

Error: Can't start program. Can not find matching Location and Reg ID.

You might get this error if RetailEdge is not able to find a match combination of Location ID and RegID. If this happens, you may need to edit RetailEdge’s configuration file (RetailEdge.ini). This file is found in the application’s program folder, usually “"C:\Program Files\High Meadow Business Solutions\RetailEdge 8.0”. Edit the file and try changing the RegID line to a value of 1.

Error: Can't start program. Problem while reading settings file (WKS).

This error can happen if the Settings_Wks table is corrupted or otherwise damaged.

Could not establish a connection to the Database (DB Name). Please check your settings in "Tools, Settings, Server".

This usually means you have a typo in the DB Name value in the Tools / Settings / Server Connection settings.

Error: Can't start program. Invalid Location setting.

This error happens if the Locations “LocID” value is incorrect. If this happens, you need to contact Customer Support. This can not be repaired by users.

Error: Can't start program. Invalid Password.

This usually means you have a typo in the password value in the Tools / Settings / Server Connection settings. In most cases, this should be left at the default value of "RetailEdge8.0".

Error: Can't start program. Unable to log in to server.

This error can happen if the Ret_Users table is corrupted or otherwise damaged.

Unknown initialization error.

This error message is caused by a general failure of the RetailEdge client attempting to log into the server. Please call High Meadow Business Solutions for assistance.

Although their are many reasons why RetailEdge (or any application for that matter) might not start, the two that account for 95 percent of the starting problems are:

    1. The Windows Firewall was turned on without allowing Exceptions.
Although we highly recommend that you have the firewall on, many people turn the windows firewall off because they are protected with another program or are not connected to the internet. If the firewall gets turned on (sometimes during a Windows update), then it will by default block RetailEdge from running.

This topic will tell you how you should configure the Windows firewall so that this does not occur. http://www.retailedge.com/phpBB/viewtop ... 221&p=1427

    2. Anti-Virus Software or Internet Security Suites

Although RetailEdge does not need the internet to run, RetailEdge uses an IP address to identify the location of the database server. Sometimes these software suites will prompt you with a pop up box to allow, grant or deny the file access. You should choose to Allow RetailEdge access. If you inadvertently deny access to RetailEdge, then you will have to determine how to unblock or re-allow access with your AV or Internet Security software. These programs can be pretty invasive when it comes to re-allowing programs. We have seen RetailEdge users re-allow RetailEdge, the appropriate IP addresses and Ports, completely disable the software with no success. Only a full removal of the program would re-allow RetailEdge to run again. So be careful with these types of applications.

    Norton Internet Security Issues

by RetailEdge Moderator » Fri Aug 01, 2008 5:13 pm

Norton Internet Security can sometimes not allow RetailEdge to run because sometimes RetailEdge can be set to check the internet for updates. Also in a multi-location environment the synchronization engine can be blocked without warning. You can change these settings in Norton, but sometimes if it happens, this is what you need to do to configure Norton to allow RetailEdge to run.

    1. Open Internet Security.
    2. Choose Personal Firewall
    3 Press Configure Programs
    4. Add RetailEdge or RECON to the list of allowable programs.
