Fred,
Historically, the reason the full page receipt is laid out as it is is to be compatible with Intuit's QuickBooks preprinted Invoice/Sales Receipt forms. Dating back to version 5.0, RetailEdge has been able to print full page receipts on compatible preprinted forms or on blank paper.
Since we were formatting to match a "fixed" standard, we felt that it was important to place the ItemID in the ITEM column. The ItemID is a shorter number and fits better than a stock number (SKU) which can be up to 50 characters long. We placed the stock number at the end of the description to allow for the potential of large numbers of characters.
Over time, the need to offer a preprinted form has decreased and I suspect that most of our customers that use the full page receipt are printing on blank paper. It might be time to consider adding a third full page receipt option - one that prints on blank paper but does not have to follow the QuickBooks Invoice style. This would give us additional flexibility and allow us to control how we format the layout.
BTW: Many customers prefer the ItemID because of it's shorter nature. The shorter value is far easier to enter into the sales screen for returns, exchanges, etc.
Also, please consider that while your store may have particular needs or a way of doing business, other customers have different sets of needs and do business differently. We're constantly having to juggle lots of requests and opinions and we try to do our best to blend everyone's input into something useful.
Anyway, all that said, I'll add this thread to our suggestion box. I like the idea but we (obviously) can't make any promises as to when and if this might actually get done.
Thanks for the input.
