Are gift cards integrated in RetailEdge?

by RetailEdge Moderator » Mon Jul 16, 2007 10:15 am

Yes gift cards are integrated into RetailEdge point of sale software. You simply have to create a Gift Card Item in your inventory. When you create the item, fill in the required inventory information making sure:

    1. The Stock Number is something short like "GIFT" or "G1" to allow it to be quickly typed in at the time of sale.
    2. The Cost of Gift Cards are $0.00.
    3. If you are not going to have specific Gift Card pricing set the Retail Price to $0.00. RetailEdge will ask at the time of sale for a dollar value.
    4. The item is put into a separate Department of its own (so that the Gift Card margin does not affect other department's margins)
    5. The Vendor is the Store.
    6. The Stock Type is Gift.

If you are going to have many different price point gift cards you might consider using an alias (like "G") for the gift cards, to make selling the gift cards faster.

When you sell the the gift card, on the payment screen when posting the sale, you will be asked to assign a gift card number to each gift card being sold. This can be manually entered, or you can scan a unique barcode or you can swipe a magnetic strip on the back of the card.

When a customer comes in to use (redeem) the gift card, on the Sales Screen payment tab you will press the button "Use Gift Card". RetailEdge will then ask you to swipe the card or scan the barcode or manually enter the gift card number(s) of the card(s) being used.

Gift cards can use the same magstrip reader to process the gift cards as you are using to process credit cards. The gift cards do not get processed though the processor. RetailEdge handles all gift card balances and transactions. All you need to do is purchase the gift cards. These typically run somewhere between $0.40 and $1.00 each depending on how fancy you want to make them. RetailEdge can also print out a gift card barcode label at the time of sale. Bead shops (or other store types where a $1.00 gift card might be cost prohibitive) have printed out the gift card labels and attached them to a foldable business card and put them in glassine envelopes. You can do this for only a few cents.

RetailEdge will work with most gift card printing solutions. RetailEdge has also partnered with PlasticCard Plus to provide our customers with affordable printed gift card options. No additional monthly fees and inexpensive gift cards with magnetic strips that start as low as $0.32 each.

RetailEdge gift cards can be reused and recharged. Recharging gift cards gives you the flexibility to use the cards not only as traditional gift cards but for loyalty programs and discount cards.

With RetailEdge's gift card reports you can quickly and easily see gift card balances and purchase history.
