    Static IP requirement

    by EdgyUser » Thu Mar 30, 2006 12:50 pm

Do all locations where Retail Edge is installed require static IP's?

If I have RECON/Server installed at one location, does IT need a static IP, or does it just need static IPs elsewhere so it knows where to poll them?

    Would this configuration work:

Home: RECON/Server or RECON/Server/Workstation installed in internal network (Dynamic IP to outside world)
Store1: Workstation (Static IP to outside)
Store2: Workstation (Static IP to outside)

(just trying to lessen my expenses with static IP charges in multiple locations).

    Thanks

We recommend that there is at least one external static IP for each location for simplicity and to make it easier to access a machine in each location. However, since the RECON in located in one of the locations and can access the data in that location using an internal IP address range (e.g., 192.168.x.x) you don't really need a static IP for the location where RECON is installed.

One solution that some customers have used to reduce costs is to setup a Dynamic DNS. You can setup a Dynamic DNS with a company like http://www.dyndns.com. This service is free and allows you to alias a dynamic IP address to a static hostname in any of the many domains they offer. They provide this service, for up to five (5) hostnames, free to the Internet community. This would save you the cost of setting up Static IPs for your locations.

One other thng about using a service like dydns.com or no-ip.org is controlling your IP address when it changes.

Here is the problem. Most people purchase the basic plan of internet to their store. This basic plan has what is called a dynamic IP address. For an additional fee you can pay for a static IP address, but not many people do. So if you register your IP in no-ip.org to a hostname, and then your IP changes, you're out of luck.

But what you can do is get a dynamic update client such as the one no-ip.org has for their service. You run it as a system service on one of your machines in your store, and it basically keeps no-ip.org up to date with what your current IP address is.

Sorry if that sounds complicated, but its really not. Takes just a couple minutes. After you get it all set up, wait like 5 mins for the info to propogate around the internet. Then your buddy across the country should be able to ping you.

    Good luck!

Another alternative to the static IP is to setup VPNs through a router. We recommend that you have VPNs setup between your remote location(s) and your central location. If you use a router to setup the VPN, this can handle the issue of a non-static IP address which will save you money (many ISPs will charge more for a static address) and be more secure. A Linksys box that can handle a large number of VPNs (conducting up to 50 simultaneous IPSec VPN tunnels) can be found here:

    http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1115416832495&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=3249522279B02

These routers can be purchased for a little over $100.00 and so will pay for themselves quickly.
