ANSWER: You don't need a bar-code scanner to run RetailEdge effectively. Scanners will speed up entering items at the point-of-sale and may reduce errors, but you do not need one. If you determine that you would like a scanner, there a number of different types you can choose from. From lowest to highest cost these are:
CCD (Charged Coupled Device) Scanners. These are very inexpensive but are not as effective at reading barcodes on uneven surfaces.
Single Line Laser Scanners. These are the type that most customers purchase. These can be hand held or fixed projection. These devices can also have a trigger or be "hands free" (turn on when presented with a bar code)
Omnidirectional Laser Scanners. These are typically the type you see in the grocery store. They have a laser projecting out in a number of different directions so that you don't have to present the bar code to the scanner in a specific direction. These will typically allow you to scan items more quickly. Also these scanners will allow you to program special codes into them to accommodate variable (scale) bar codes. These tend to be more expensive.
